Adventures in Clean Eating – Introduction (aka What the Heck is Going On?)

As I’ve mentioned here (and a number of other times…), I’ve gotten off track with my eating habits.  I decided I really needed something to shake me up and get me back on track. My mind kept drifting back a couple of weeks ago to a visit with my brother. He lives in TN now, but was in town for the weekend. As background, since moving to TN, he and my sister in law have gotten way into Cross Fit and are so. stinking. buff. Seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them healthier or happier. It’s the kind of passion that’s infectious you know? You just look at them and think, “I want to feel like that!”

Anyhoo, my brother was finishing up a clean eating challenge/detox with his box (aka cross fit gym) so he told me a little bit about it. The long and short is that it is focused on protein and veggies and healthy fats – and pretty much none of what I consider carbs that are (frankly) a staple in my diet (rice, bread, white potatoes).  No sugar. No salt. Certainly no processed junk. No alcohol.  I was impressed with his dedication but quietly thinking he’s nuts that there was no way I could do that!

But, it stayed on my mind. So on Monday I started texting him, asking him for details. If you’ve ever met my brother,  you know he could sell ice to an Eskimo, so it wasn’t long before I was also emailing my sis for more info. Tuesday I was home with Ally (who was sick) and it seemed like the perfect time to jump in. So I did!  My plan is to do a weekly follow up/summary to give an idea of how I’ve felt during this process. The eating plan isn’t a diet, but it’s meant to sort of jump start you into a lifestyle change. To be perfectly honest, it’s not a lifestyle change I’ve bought into just yet. BUT. I promised myself I would give it a fair trial for 4 weeks and evaluate. I’m also trying to learn more about food and energy and what works for me. I hope my experience is helpful for others, but I’m mostly doing it (and blogging) for my own selfish ends. :) So there ya go.

Have you ever tried a “detox”?

Was it a set plan or program that you purchased?

Or was it more of a guideline for you to make it up as you go?
